We are now in the doldrums of winter. There is only one football game left, and it's more about what squares you picked and how good the barbecue is anyway. That and remembering to go to the john while the players are still playing football so that you donât miss any of the commercials. After all, it costs over two million dollars a half minute to put these things on the air. Even the players donât make that much money.
There was one interesting event that occurred Friday night however.
It seems that Eddie the bartender was holding forth at the icehouse, when his friend "Big Robert" came in with his right shoulder hanging real low.
"Must have dislocated his shoulder", thought Eddie.
But "Big Robert's" face beamed as he said, "I got a present for ya!". And raised his right hand and presented Eddie with a good-sized cotton tailed rabbit.
"Nice rabbit", said Eddie. "Where did you get him?"
"I hit him with my car on the way over here." Answered "Big Robert". He was almost off the road, but I swerved at the last second and just popped him on the shoulder. A really beautiful piece of driving".
Eddie accepted the rabbit, and then noticed that it wasnât field dressed.
"Dammit!" growled Eddie, "You're giving me road kill and it isnât even field dressed?"
"I didnât have my knife with me". Said "Big Robert". And besides, feel him, he's still warm."
"Stan the tree man", sitting at the bar, reached out a hand. "Give him to me, I'll clean him." He said. As Stan walked out of the icehouse Eddie noticed that of all the strange things, Stan had a house cat on a leash. When he came back with the cleaned and skinned rabbit, he didnât bring the cat back in with him.
Eddie figures he either left the cat outside with the giblets, or he put the rabbit in his car, and cleaned and skinned the cat and brought it back into the icehouse.
Either way, Eddie says that it cooked up just fine, and that he doesn't look at house cats the same way as he used to.
