Last week, as you may recall, the National Rifle Association had a convention in Houston, Texas.
Tom Delay was to give the key note speech and was preceded by rock musician, Ted Nugent.
Mr. Nugent, let it be known to the gathering that he wanted carjackers, rapists, burglars, child molesters, and finally, "bad guys" in general, dead. Preferably at the scene of the crime or the bad deed.
Killing them would obviously preclude the need for court cases, paroles, early release programs, and other stumbling blocks to an enlightened criminal justice system.
All in all, Mr. Nugent's most significant remarks pointed to simple solutions for complex problems. An admirable focus of effort indeed.
Tom Delay, on the other hand, apparently in response to a democratic party that wishes him to seek employment outside of the government sphere, was quoted as saying: "When a man is in trouble or in a good fight, you want to have your friends around. Preferably armed."
Now this statement leads you to believe that Mr. Delay thinks that he might be in trouble and in a good fight, and further, that being surrounded by a bunch of armed friends makes him feel good.
One can only assume that he is hoping that his "armed friends" demonstrate their loyalty by shooting a few of these pesky democrats.
Notice how Mr. Delayâs statement reflects feelings of a selfish and personal nature, being as they are all about him and his career, while Mr. Nugentâs words refer to concepts that are national in scope. Trying to shore up the foundations of society itself.
But enough of that. The big news is what didnât get said.
Another year has come and gone, and the Montrose Beer and Gun Club, once again was not invited to speak at the event. And once again, the spiritually transporting practice of drinking beer and shooting guns was not represented at the annual gathering of the NRA.
Now does that mean that the NRA is too conservative for our kind? Or does it mean that they are too liberal?
It's kind of hard to say.
