September 16 2006

Well gang, it just wouldn’t be right if we didn’t take the time this week to mark the passing of a great lady.
Namely, Anne Richards.
She belonged to an era when politicians weren’t afraid to actually stand for something, and in those days there was something to be afraid of.
In fact, almost anybody who stood up for almost anything, wound up on Boot Hill. The Kennedy brothers, Martin Luther King, Edgar Meathers, George Lincoln Rockwell, Malcom X…George Wallace and Ronald Reagan were both shot but pulled through……..and then there were other incidents that were merely attempts or foiled plots.
Thankfully, politicians have finally gotten the idea, and with the help of polls and Madison Avenue campaign in such a way that sometimes it’s hard to tell what they stand for.
One thing’s for certain, they don’t stand for things that the people really care about, Like affordable health care, affordable education for our kids, freedom from fossil fuel dependency. Stuff like that.
No, they are issues that you can really sink your teeth into. And you’d better get a good grip too, because they’re tough issues. Meaning that you may have to shake up the status quo a little.
Status quo; that ain’t right. You start out saying good-bye to Anne Richards, and wind up speaking Latin. Maybe "rock the boat" would be more appropriate.
At any rate, it would be nice to think that we’ll see the likes of her again.
And if there’s a here after, wouldn’t it be a hoot to eaves drop on a conversation between Anne Richards and Barbara Jordan?
Especially if politics just happened to be the topic of the day.
You bet it would.
Hang in there gang.

Till next week
