September 2 2006
There’s good news this week gang. Not only are there no injuries serious enough to report, and not only is next week the first week of professional football, but next Sunday, September 10th our club will hold the kick-off party for the 2006 edition of the Montrose Beer and Gun Club Cook-off and Musical Extravaganza, benefiting kids who wish things were better.
The music on Sunday evening will be provided by Kiki and Ransom, who will also be playing at the benefit. That’s good news too.
As in past years, there will be a three dollar donation at the door which will go to our club’s Prosthesis Fund, which helps those members who have lost portions of their bodies while drinking beer and shooting guns.
The whole idea of the gathering is to let everyone know that we are serious about holding the benefit again this year, to pass out sign-up sheets for the cooking teams, and to let the cooks from last year try and track down some of their cooking gear that inexplicably didn’t make it back home with them after last years event.
There was one of last years cooks who made it home without his huge barbeque pit that gets along on four steel belted Michelin ties.
He says he’s not really worried about, because it will probably still be attached to his Chevy Suburban when it turns up.
The little get-together will be held at Rudyard’s Pub, located at 2010 Waugh Drive on Sunday September 10th, that’s the day after Sam’s birthday.
Lelia Rodgers who owns the place, and is official custodian of the club’s neon sign, would only let us book the upstairs room the two hours between six and eight PM. It seems that having a group like ours hanging around any later than that on a Sunday evening would be bad for Rudyard’s image. And you can certainly empathize with her feelings.
At any rate, show up, get together with old friends, and who knows? Maybe put together a cooking team for the big competition on October 21st at the West Alabama Ice-House.
Yes, it’s official. We’re gonna do it again.
Till next week
