Well gang, Today is the first day of Autumn and cool weather is on it’s way to Houston. For instance, today it’s only going to get up to Ninety degrees or so.
Along with Fall comes the Montrose Beer and Gun Club’s sixth annual Cook-off and Musical Extravaganza to benefit kids who wish things were better.
If you want to be listed on the souvenir t-shirt you’ll have to sign up as a cook or a sponsor in the next week. So track down a sign-up sheet at one off the usual Montrose watering holes, and get it done.
The cooking teams are going to be limited to only twenty-five, so don’t wait too long, hear?
There was going to be dunking booth this year with girls wearing t-shirts, but the only girls that were willing to participate were all over seventy-five years old.
Our medical advisor admired the ladies for their spirit, but felt that if we had a cold front come through they might be risking a heart attack, stroke or pneumonia. So it was called off.
The belly-dancers are still scheduled to dance however. Although the benefit is primarily for adults, you’ve got to have something to occupy the children’s attention too.
That’s our story, and we’re sticking to it.
Remember, the big event is Saturday October 21st at the West Alabama Ice House, Between 1:00PM and 6:00PM or so.
Come on down for some good music, some good chow, and either donate something to the silent auction, or bid on something.
There is some bad news however. In case you haven’t heard, Willie Nelson and some of his boys were busted for possession of marijuana and illegal mushrooms. Willie reportedly said, "Thank God it wasn’t spinach, or I might be dead by now.
Leave it to Willie to keep his perspective.
In another unfortunate event, "Skip" Mariner and his buddy Luther Hodge, decided to try fishing with dynamite.
They found a likely looking spot on the river, anchored "Skip’s" new center console boat, and tossed some dynamite out on the upstream side of the boat.
Well, the dynamite drifted back in the current, and when it went off it was directly under the boat. The hull of the boat split, and she sunk in place.
"At least we know where the boat is," said "Skip" "She’s right at the end of that anchor rope and she ain’t goin’ nowhere, and the salvage of it and the motor will be a cinch. But it sure broke my heart to see all those fish drifting down stream.
Yeah, you guessed it. "Skip" and Luther are just fine.
Till next week
