Well gang, this is the last weekend of regular season baseball, and one of our boys of Summer will play his last games as a Houston Astro after 20 beautiful years with the same club. You will play hell seeing the likes of him again. He played the game of baseball the way he played the game of life…with character.
If there were ever any contract disputes, it seems like you never heard about them.
He loved the position of catcher, but he played anywhere that the team said that they needed him.
If he hit the ball to an infielder, that infielder knew that he was going to give it everything that he had in the tank going down to first base.
Because of his speed, he was made a lead off hitter. The idea being for him to get on first base for the big guys to drive him in. But he also holds the National League record for lead off home runs. All time.
If his name was ever in the newspaper for something that he did while he was off the field of play, it probably had something to do with charity work.
He and his lovely wife and kids are a pleasure to observe when they interact with each other in public.
Who sez athletes aren’t role models?
If this guy didn’t drink the occasional beer, smoke a cigar once in a while, and know how to handle a Harley Davidson, you’d have to suspect that maybe something was a little wrong with him.
At any rate, tonight and tomorrow afternoon are the last two games he’s ever going to play, for the only professional team that he’s ever played for.
Word has it that tonight he is going to don the tools of ignorance for one last time , and step behind the plate for an inning or so.
If you’re not at "Minute Maid", take yourself to a watering hole, wrap yourself around the outside of a beer or so, and treat yourself to a pretty piece of history.
Unless you don’t want to share it with anybody, in which case, pick up a six-pack and some hot dogs and go watch the final scene at home.
Maybe with the radio on.
They call him Craig Biggio.
Till next week
