October 27 2007
Well gang, the annual benefit has been successfully executed for yet another year. That makes seven all told.
Naturally, you want to know how much money was raised. Well, rumor has it that $15,000 was raised, and the sales of the cook books might push the total a little higher than that.
Not too shabby for a shabby bunch like us.
There aren’t words to describe the effort that the whole thing required, and the sprite de corp that was displayed during that efforting.
We had two sheriffs for the heavy duty security, and they couldn’t believe that there was a crowd that big, and they seldom heard a discouraging word, and the clouds weren’t all that bad either.
Of course we had our own internal security, and when it looked like somebody might be getting a little out of hand, they were tapped judiciously behind the ear with a black-jack, bound and gagged, and stuffed in a van that was on stand-by for that purpose.
But the sheriffs didn’t know that. It would have ruined the effect if they had. As usual, the belly dancers absolutely fascinated the younger tykes, and some of the older tykes seemed to be taking more than just a casual academic interest in their gyrations as well.
The bands gave it their all as usual. Everybody had to admit that it wasn’t every day that you saw two men over eighty years of age playing a vibraphone duet on only one vibraphone, and neither one of them getting injured in the process.
The food judges had an especially hard time of it this year. It seems that all the entries were so good, that some of the judges just gave up trying to rank the dishes in order of excellence, and just resorted to flipping a coin.
It must have been hard on some of the cooks who didn’t place, but knew damn well that their entry was highly competitive.
The long and the short of it is, the club wants to thank every body who had anything at all to do with last weeks benefit.
Especially those few who got tapped behind the ear and spent some of the time in that van.
Maybe some time in June, we’ll have to think about doing it again, and have a good time and raise some money for kids who wish things were better.
Till next week
