October 4 2008
Well gang, while the rest of the nation is going to hell in a basket, and while the presidential competition is proving to us all that we are going to vote for the guy that we thought we were going to vote for anyway, we still thankfully have this year’s MB&GC Cook-off and Musical Extravaganza to look forward to.
On Saturday October 25th we will once again gather at the West Alabama Ice House and open our hearts for kids who wish things were better. And to eat good chow, and to listen to good music, and to be in the mix with a bunch of people that know how to have a good time.
God knows, Texans ain’t ordinary people, and Houstonians ain’t ordinary Texans.
With the help of a damn good mayor, Houstonians put their shoulder to the wheel and carried the unfortunate victims of Katrina on their backs, and didn’t hesitate when the U.S. Government did hesitate.
At a time when too many of us are still suffering from the effects of hurricane Ike, the MB&GC, regardless of the fact that we are an unsavory crowd at best, are asking that you all pitch in and support. . .well. . .kids who wish things were better.
So far, we have more cooks, who are the backbone of our gathering, than we had originally hoped for. So, the food is going to be there.
Bob Chadwick will once again lead things off with a jazz ensemble, and Beans Barton, who you may have heard of, along with The Leo Trio, The Third Ear, and that great favorite of children of all ages, our belly dancers, will be back again this year.
The old boys love these girls, but the real trip is watching the kids. You know?
The most important thing to remember is to bring stuff for the silent auction.
It must be noted that while white elephants and re-gifting is encouraged, along with items that you care to donate because they just caught your eye as being appropriate to the gathering, ex-wives, ex-husbands, and the castoffs from more casual relationships are frowned upon in as much as they are occasionally accompanied with hard feelings.
Guns and ammunition, along with heavier ordnance are discouraged also, mostly because there will be police, sheriffs, and God only knows what federal agencies monitoring the proceedings as usual.
But you know how it is.
Get your ducks in a row, and get ready for a good time with a bunch of good people.
Till next week
